A Complete Overhaul of DLM's Most Critical Business Application
Application Development
Microsoft Windows
Dorris Lumber & Moulding Co. (DLM), the largest producer of solid lineal moldings in California, embarked on a pivotal IT project to enhance its operational efficiency and ensure sustainability in the digital era. The focus was on the DLMSYS, an in-house developed application critical to the company's inventory, invoicing, sales, and overall business management.
From the outset, time was limited as the application’s key developer was set to soon retire. The application needed to be decompiled, fully understood, rebuilt, and migrated to supportable, redundant infrastructure that would facilitate regular patching, security updates, and feature enhancements, and a post-engagement support model that would not leave DLM without someone to contact if issues arose.
To address these challenges, DLM chose to partner with NvisionKC to provide a complete overhaul of its most important internal business processes. This collaboration aimed to transition responsibilities smoothly and maintain the system's functionality and operation during initial knowledge transfer, review of source code and program functions, in-line application patching and upgrades, user training and migration to the new platform, and system backups and recovery.
Over the course of this project, NvisionKC assumed control of the production system in its current state and worked with the retiring employee to perform knowledge transfer and a comprehensive review of 35K lines of code. As the project progressed, NvisionKC built alpha, beta, and production versions of the application which supported nine critical functions within manufacturing and business operations. After completing testing, the migration to the production application went without a hitch. DLM’s refactored application is current, supportable, with digitally signed code and the capability to check for software updates at launch.
The partnership between DLM and NvisionKC resulted in seamless support for the DLMSYS, ensuring business continuity and operational efficiency. The project exemplifies how specific domain knowledge and the right skillset can significantly improve a company's technology position while continuing to move them forward.
